Abeyance is a status that is given to Section One operatives that fail to measure up to Section standards. Rather than mark them for immediate death (Cancellation) abeyance operatives serve a function of participating in missions with a low probability of success or high operative loss.
Most operatives do not know that they have been placed in Abeyance and many do not survive their initial abeyance missions.
